  1. An interesting article on NewMR by Ray Poynter prompted this post. He spoke about the differences between customer focus and customer centricity and the often times confusion between the two terms. That is why I tend to speak about customer first rather than customer centricity these days.

In its simplest form a customer first strategy is about thinking customer first in everything you do. Yes I know it sounds easy but it really isn’t. That it doesn’t come naturally, at least to start with. And that it involves a culture change to move the organisation in this direction. But I can assure you it’s worth it; its value is now well proven.

  2. A user feedback tool is a tool that is used on your website or mobile app to discover how users experience your online service. You are probably wondering now: “Yes, but a quantitative analytics tool (such as web statistics) supplies you with the exact same information?” This is not entirely true, because a user feedback tool retrieves the “why” question: Why do your visitors behave the way they do on your website?

  3. What are people saying about your brand online when you're not listening? And how much customer feedback are you missing out on?These are key problems that one North East-based company is hoping to solve. “There's no business that isn't being talked about somewhere,” Steve Erdal, director of linguistics at wordnerds, explained to BusinessCloud.

“You know there's information out there that's useful, but pinpointing it and getting it in an understandable state is difficult.” While the likes of Google and third-party apps are very good at finding specific words and phrases across the internet, they don’t offer interpretation. In contrast wordnerds, which began life during a hackathon for Nissan, is determining what people actually mean by applying text analytics.

  4. Self-organizing models of governance, like holacracy, are comprehensive approaches to structuring and running businesses. They replace the top-down hegemonic system most enterprises still use, replacing the traditional schema with a new way of distributing real authority that instills adaptiveness and employee engagement in the fabric of an organization. Leaders have always delegated, but what makes holacracy different is that it delivers real control and responsibility. This is not delegation but actually a far more interesting and human activity of giving up power, distributing trust among an organization’s workers.

  5. The fundamental responsibility of a Product Manager is to be the company’s leading expert on the customer. In fact, Product Managers often act as mediators between their customers and design teams to identify where their product or service is lagging and ensure that the underlying needs for their online customer are aligned with their service or product offering. Online feedback serves as a great way for connecting product performance and customer expectations.

  6. When it comes to customer satisfaction, bad customer service is not a good thing – initially. However, the right company can take the critique they get from their bad customer service and turn it into a good thing.

  8. I’m already seeing it: people are starting to talk and write about customer experience trends for 2019. It’s only the start of Q4! We haven’t even made it through 2018 yet! Still lots of time to make things happen. (Right?!)

Regardless, I’m not big on talking about customer experience trends for the new year any more. I have in the past, but I gave up a couple years ago. Why? Because I’m finding that a lot of companies are still trying to figure out the basics. Sadly.

  10. Rise Science came to IDEO with a challenge. The young startup had built a robust data platform for college and professional athletes to track their sleep and adjust their behavior so that they played at peak performance. But for the players, the experience was challenging. Rise expected athletes to look at data-driven charts and graphs to determine what decisions to make next, but players struggled to find those insights. Rise was convinced they just needed easier-to-read charts and graphs.
