Recently I was talking to someone who is relatively new to the field of usability and user experience. He has developed a web application and wanted some ideas for getting feedback from users. He commented that he was planning on sending out a survey to users to see what they think about the web application. That was his plan for user testing. I’m so entrenched in the concept of usability and user testing that I have to stop sometimes and remember that not everyone else is.

The reality is site owners – especially of small businesses – are often too attached to the look and feel of their sites and thus lack the perspective to recognize faults, even when they're glaringly obvious. Before going out to get feedback it is important to determine what it is you’d like to know. Are you seeking information on your existing products and services and how these are being used? Do you want to review the problems, challenges and opportunities that your customers face? Are you planning new product development?
